2/3/2024 0 Comments Gay pride day dc![]() ![]() “Every year, everybody becomes more comfortable with themselves, very comfortable being around everybody, just being at-one and loving because there’s no boundary to love,” said Jasmie Barrios, 21, of Silver Spring. “I’m just here because it’s celebrating being gay, and it’s finally a time we can be proud and not be ashamed,” said Lawrence Barrios, 18, of Silver Spring, Maryland. More than 200 contingents marched in the parade and the parade route was lined with people 5-6 deep in some locations. This series of events was a turning point for the LGBTQ+ community and marks one of the most significant events leading to the modern gay rights movement. Mayor Muriel Bowser helped lead the parade, walking the route, waving and tossing beads to the crowds who lined New Hampshire Avenue Northwest. In June of 1969, a group of LGBTQ+ people in New York City rioted following a police raid of the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar located on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village. Marchers, floats, bands and entertainment delighted parade watchers along the mile and a half route.
